Satellite activities are scheduled a week before the main event, making of the latter a very special and different one. We begin the Sunday prior to the race with the Torch Run, or Recorrido de la Antorcha, where families are chosen to walk different stretches of the race route. The torch is handed over from one family to the next, resulting in an environment full of happiness. Family generations participate every year wearing a white t-shirt with the torch printed on it and a banner representing their respective community: inspirational messages are also written on the banners. Once the whole route is covered, the families arrive altogether to the Pájaros Ballpark and the torch is then handed over to the person to whom the Race was dedicated that year; this person/family proceeds to ignite the Olympic Flame. This act inaugurates the main and satellite activities. All participants finish this event enjoying a succulent asopao and listening to contemporary local music. The Torch Run is an activity that takes several months to plan and organize, given that every participating family is personally visited and consulted to ensure its success, logistic and execution.
The traditional Verbenas, or daily festival, are the perfect addendum to our race: you will find kiosks selling traditional drinks and food. Amusement park rides, fireworks and stage performances make of this event a very popular one, where the best local music, orchestras and singers interpret our traditional music.
We also have two evenings of Talent Show performances, where youths from all around the island are given the opportunity to demonstrate their artistic abilities. This show attracts many people, generally fans of the evening’s performers. The artists are rewarded with a cash prize, and the publicity they are exposed to, which may lead to a future outcome of fame and recognition.
The Saturday prior to the Race, a Family Bike Race, or Bicicletada, is held, where hundreds of bikers depart from the ballpark. Once the families are signed up they are automatically participating on the bike raffle wich take place once everyone returns to the park. The bike route is a very simple one, designed with care, and offering multiple oases with water and energy drinks for the contestants. It is important to mention that this is a non-competitive activity for the whole family and totally free of charge.
